Blainville's Beaked Whale Sightings

Cascadia Research Collective (CRC) has been undertaking surveys for odontocetes in Hawaiian waters since 2000. From photo-identification and satellite tagging there is evidence of a small resident population of Blainville's beaked whales off the island of Hawaiʻi (Big Island), as well as an offshore population. Less is known about this species off other islands. Survey CRC1 represents shipborne sightings while survey CRC2 shows positions identified via satellite tags.

Dr. Joseph Mobley of the Marine Mammal Research Consultants (MMRC) led aerial surveys for cetaceans in Hawaiian waters from 1993-2003.
